01SEASONS

How do the seasons change a Lubbock rental?

Each South Plains season changes how we handle a rental. Spring brings 60+ mph gusts and dust, so we stake units. Summer highs of 91–93°F call for more frequent service. Fall brings cotton harvest and gin crews, and winter brings hard freezes and protected handwash water.

Wind & dust season

April is Lubbock's windiest month, and dust storms peak in early spring. A 2023 storm brought 77 mph gusts and 14 hours of dust. Every unit on an open lot gets stakes or straps, and doors face away from the south wind.

Do cotton harvest crews need porta potties?

Yes. Farms with 11 or more hand laborers need 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility per 20 workers under OSHA 1928.110, within a quarter-mile walk. Crews in the field 3 hours or less are exempt. Harvest and gin season runs roughly October into January across the High Plains.

Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. The Texas High Plains grows about two-thirds of Texas cotton. Towable unit trailers move with the crew from field to field.

FAQFROM REAL CALLS

What callers ask before they book

Every question below was asked on a real rental call. The short answer comes first, then the conditions that change it.

Do harvest crews need toilets?

Yes, on farms with 11 or more hand laborers. OSHA 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility per 20 workers, within a quarter-mile walk, unless crews are in the field 3 hours or less. Towable units move with the crew.

Will the wind blow it over?

Not when it's set right. Lubbock averages about 12.4 mph wind, and spring gusts and dust storms can top 60 mph, so we stake or strap units on open lots and face doors away from the south wind. Never untie a staked unit to move it.

What about dust storms?

Units are sealed except for the roof vent, so dust settles on the outside, not in the tank. After a blowing-dust day, a regular service wipes them down. For events, we turn doors away from the wind so dust doesn't blow in when people open them.

Do porta potties freeze in a Lubbock winter?

The holding tank rarely freezes solid, but handwash water and flush tanks can. When a hard freeze is forecast, we add a winter tank treatment and drain or protect sink water. December and January lows average in the upper 20s.

Will it smell in the summer heat?

Heat speeds up odor, and Lubbock's July highs average about 93°F. Shade, a breeze, and twice-weekly service for busy units keep it under control. We add fresh deodorizer every visit.

Can your truck reach a ranch or lease road?

Usually, if the caliche or dirt is dry and firm. Tell us about cattle guards, gates and soft spots. After a heavy rain we may set the unit at the pavement edge so the service truck doesn't bog down.
